Tom and Puff, if I had known how to draw at 11. Which I didn't.
Meet Charity Bishop. Author, Dreamer, and Historian of Imaginary Worlds

I remember the day well. It all began on a dark and stormy afternoon, as a quiet, gentle rain drenched my little house on the prairie. As a thumbed through 9 Lives, a Garfield book about Sam Spayed, my eleven-year-old self realized people write books, and if that’s the case, I could pen my own! From that day on, I scribbled. I wrote in a frenzy. On went Yanni, with his heart-pounding rhythms, and I embarked on madcap adventures with detective felines (named Tom and Puff). After that, I wrote similar stories to whatever I happened to be reading at the time, always with plenty of derring-do, damsels in distress, and cliffhanger adventures (I learned that from Nancy Drew)!

I wrote my first book at twelve, and felt proud of all 18,000 words of it. A spectacular horse adventure at fourteen… and my laptop perished. I had yet to learn to back up anything, and I lost the entire thing, but that has never stopped me. I started in with a dogged determination to write it over again. Then came a novel at sixteen about a telepathic boy named Oscar Gallagher in 1770s India, and his adventures in England and America, as the Revolution raged. (I still want to rewrite that one, and intend to in 2026.)

Eventually, I started writing and independently publishing books for real. In the 31 years since I started writing, I learned a lot about story-crafting… and I developed a long-lasting passion for magical realism, speculative fiction, historical fantasy, and straight up historical fiction. I have dabbled in Victorian suspense, 1920s horror, the Tudor court, walked the sinking decks of the Titanic, attended an assassins’ school in a haunted Napoleonic France, and cast spells in a magical library in India. My books are me, my identity, my life’s work. If you have read them, thank you. If you haven’t, consider it. I guarantee you’ll have a good time with flawed but likable characters, tall, dark, and handsome men, wailing banshees, assassins, dream-invading villains that drive the plot, and soul-crushing realizations, plot twists, intrigue, and heart-pounding suspense.

But what about me?

Well, I am an older and a younger daughter. Owned by two cats, though there have been many (and their antics inspire my fictional felines). Blessed to work as an editor for a living. I adore pepperoni pizza, would drink only Mountain Dew if the gods would allow it, insist on brownies and ice cream on my birthday, love the color purple, and own six hundred movies, half of them costume dramas. I have loved and lost, questioned my faith and found it again, given away books only to rediscover and repurchase them years later, and you have probably met me in one form or another online, because I have been everywhere, under many usernames, in many forms, in all kinds of fandoms ,for a long, long time.

This is my little corner of the internet, a hub for my passions and pursuits, a place to discuss with great enthusiasm the ideas that spark in my brain and spill out onto the page. Welcome, dear friends. Please stay for a while, because if you want to get to know me… well, I am in my books. In every line and dash, in every virtue and vice, in each page and chapter and hopeful ending after a time of darkness. Let’s explore together! If you like me, and want to stay abreast of my posts, please join my mailing list. I will send you once a month updates with all my content!
