With time comes the demand for change.
I started this website in 1998. It began as a hodgepodge of my favorite things… images from The Mask of Zorro, my writing, a handful of movie reviews. Over time, it evolved into a massive collection of costume drama reviews with parental guides so readers could choose which films they wanted to watch based on their personal standards. But the internet has changed in the last twenty-eight years. Now, you can find parent guides not only on multiple websites devoted to the subject, but also on IMDB’s Parent Guides. Reviews flooded the internet, many of them on YouTube, a visual medium to suit a visual experience.
I kept the reviews up, reasoning people who liked costume dramas (like me) might like to read (like me) and might purchase my books… which I realize is not true. People who like to read may not like to watch shows, and vice versa. I realized I needed to change and find readers, not movie-watchers, who might appreciate the magical realism, Christian horror, and historical fiction worlds I share on the page, and that my content should reflect that and showcase the things I am most passionate about.
When the day came to upgrade my site, I faced a choice: whether to move and reformat 2,000 reviews or to take my website in a new direction. I chose the latter. My primary passion has always been my novels and in the beautiful discovery of historical treasures. While not an easy choice to make, since eliminating my reviews meant saying goodbye to a former chapter in my life, the past is over, and the future holds vast potential. Now, you will find the things nearest and dearest to my heart here; my books, the historical events that inspired them, essays about my sources of inspiration, and reviews of the books and shows associated with those time periods or incidents. I will continue to add to them and generate new and interesting historical pieces for you to enjoy.
